Investigative Internships / Externships

Unpaid Investigator Internships for College Students

The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Maryland seeks unpaid, volunteer investigative interns in our Baltimore office for the fall, spring and summer semesters. Investigative interns learn under the guidance of staff investigators. They work with legal counsel to investigate allegations of criminal misconduct. Their main duties include conducting background investigations on witnesses, interviewing witnesses, gathering records, conducting crime scene investigations, serving subpoenas, and preparing for trial and other court appearances.  We encourage applicants to receive outside grants and funding during their internship. Preference is given to full time volunteers.

Qualifications. We prefer undergraduate students who have an interest in criminal defense and criminal law who have strong analytical, research and writing skills. Interested students should send a cover letter, resume and references to Chief Investigator Trish Slater either by mail (100 S. Charles Street, Tower II, 9th Floor, Baltimore, Maryland 21201) or email ( (link sends e-mail)).

Deadlines.  To be considered for a fall, applications should be sent by July 1. To be considered for a spring, applications should be sent by November 1. To be considered for a summer internship, applications should be sent by February 1. Applications are reviewed and offers are made on a rolling basis.
